PPBC # 6: What type of Parent are you?

This edition is hosted by Daddy Angel, you can view the submissions here:

Today's Topic: What type of Parent are you?

From what i noticed with myself in terms of taking care of the kids, i'm more of a mom-in-between. i'd like to think of myself as the fun mom/parent but at the same time the disciplinarian as well.

Me being the fun mom: i've created a lot of make believe games and funny tricks to make my kids go to bed, eat their meals, stay put or just do what they're being told to do. and not to bad mouth hubby or anything, but for obvious reasons, the kids prefer to play with mommy than with daddy. i find it heartbreaking for hubby's part but, you have to give him credit in making all the effort for them to play with him. on the lighter side is, the kids have their own games with daddy as compared to mine. so i guess it's just a matter of preference and mood.

Me as a disciplinarian: there are times when they do test my patience, i do give them warnings, when i exhausted 3 warnings and they still continue to do it, i get their hands, palms facing up and spank them - not too gentle and not too hard either. just enough to let them feel the spank. but then after the deed, i explain to them what merited them the spanking. amazingly, we only had a few lapses. the spankings are at a minimal level since they know when to stop when they hear mommy's angry voice and see mommy's angry face.

Personally, i think i'm a student parent as well. i learn so much from my kids that i can never learn from school. my kids are one of the best teachers. i've learned to appreciate the little things, to laugh all out and without a care in the world, that it's ok to ask, that nap times are the best, hugs and kisses are free, that it's ok to cry. and in return i teach them to figure things out for themselves, to pursue what they want, never be afraid to be curious, to fight for what they believe is right, the privilege to argue/debate, and to know that we, as their parents can be their friends as well.

wow. i had fun with this week's topic. looking forward to the coming topics!

tired of mp3s in my pc and my ipod

so i'm listening to these:

keeps me sane today. thank you my boys =)

Can't wait for November Potterheads?

Then take a sneak peek...

BOOK 6

i believe this is the official trailer, but i stand corrected. a lot can change on the web.

but it sure did give me the goosebumps.

can't wait!!

if only it was that easy kid...

i seriously envy those moms who have jumped the fence to stay at home mommy-hood. the perks of being with your kids 24/7.

sadly i'm one of the few who has to work to make ends meet (dramatic yes) and to save up for their futures. not that i'm saying sahms are not earning. the mommy bloggers are quite the rage now and an emerging target market. i'm just happy and blessed that with the work i have, i can still blog and earn while meeting deadlines, making presentations, and reaching quotas. good thing the paid opps are usually given at night so there's no conflict with work. one click of the publish button and i'm done.

so anyway, the point of this entry is that, i wanted to share something my eldest kyle told me. he's been quite vocal already and the conversations that we have are quite entertaining. it feels like i'm not talking to a 3 year old but someone much older than he is.

it was only last week when we were both watching cartoons while waiting for his schoolbus to arrive when he told me this:

"mommy, don't go office na ha? stay here with kyle and keon. wait for me to go home after school"

right then and there my heart melted at the though that my son wanted to be with me more than the hours we spend when i get home from work. admittedly, i had a few lapses. i came home late seeing him peacefully asleep. keon, on the other hand has been prepped for bedtime.

i wanted so much to drop everything and not go to work at all. to bug and cuddle and play with my kids all day.

but reality-wise, it's not that practical at all. as much as i would want to, there's this me inside with pride that would prefer to work and earn money through my own efforts and struggles. i'd rather not let all the burden fall on aishi's hands. as long as we're here in this country, i have to make sacrifices.

maybe, when we get to migrate in 2 year's time. things might make a 360 degree turn.

but for now, kyle and keon, it's not that easy. but soon. mommy will find a way. i want to be a WAHM you know...

IT for Me

One night while watching House, Aishi and I had an out of the blue discussion: What if we could go back to school, what would we pursue?

Aishi wanted to take up his masters, this would help a lot in the field and the management level that he is in. he would certainly learn a lot and share with his subordinates. i'm sure aishi would excel when he does take it up.

He then reverted the question to me, if i were given a chance what would i take up in school? i didn't wait for a second to answer, i wanted to take up IT, web design, and web programming. in the field that i am in, this is a huge requirement. as of now i'm just learning through online tutorials when i have the free time at work. i'd love to go back to school as much as aishi does. aishi was even kind enough and surprisingly very much concerned that i want to pursue an IT course, he recommended to get aCisco certification.

i have to agree, with thr growing need to be online almost 24/7, you need the best people with IT experience and the numbers are growing. take for example my bro G, who has one semester to go and a lot of opportunities have been presented to him. a degree / certification in IT would open a lot of doors to a great career whether in programming, design, animation. you wouldn't appreciate your disney movies if not for those cool IT guys. or the sites you visit everyday, it wouldn't be up and running if not for the IT guys.

once the finances are in order, you'll see lining up and taking up course on IT and web design. hey, i might even throw in a SEO certification. now that would be sweet!

jogging log

i mentioned i started jogging right? well it's wednesday today and i haven't started yet.

#1 i left work late monday
#2 it rained yesterday the moment i planned on leaving. sad.
#3 aishi wasn't in the mood to jog

i hope tomorrow would be day one of the jogging log.

mommy bloggers are the coolest!

once upon a time there was this mommy. working 9-5, monday to friday. one perk in her office is the unlimited internet access. one day she decided to create a blog. she blogged about her kids - funny stories about her kids, their milestones, and little stories about her life and her discoveries.

but she wanted something more from her blog. she wanted it to be interesting, she wanted her blog to earn but still maintain her blog's theme and identity. she met a lot of "frogs" on the net who promised the sun and moon but delivered nothing. until one day, while in one of her moods, she stumbled upon SocialSpark.

she found what she was looking for. SocialSpark took her for what she is - a mommy blogger.

SocialSpark found a gem in mommy bloggers. a new target market that has the power to convince and influence. so if you are a mommy blogger and you have met a lot of frogs, i think it's time you check out SocialSpark it might be your prince charming of earning while you blog.

late for a meeting. i hate it!

one of my pet peeves is being tardy. as much as possible, i make sure to arrive on time. my being tardy often happens when there's an assigned vehicle. you have to wait for it as compared to commuting where you have full control on what time to leave. this is what i love about commuting, i can plan out what time i should leave, the estimated arrival time factoring in the traffic and other scenarios.

and this is one incident where i was fuming inside. i had a 230pm meeting in makati with a client. here in our office, we reserve vehicles a day before to take us to our meetings. unfortunately due to the cost cutting measures our office mandated, we had to make do with sharing vehicles with other people or having the driver drop off the first person then pass by for the next in the office to be taken to their destination. i'm not complaining about the procedure. i totally agree with it, with the weekly gas price increase, it's really going to be hell.

what i hate is the organization of the trips. i just found out on the day itself that i was scheduled with a trip all the way to alabang at 1230. take note mine is at 200pm. (i always include a 30 minute leeway) so i called the driver up and asked him if he's in the office already. but what do you know, he's stuck in traffic in Magallanes. i didn't pry as to what time he left and if he made little stop overs along the way. strike one: he answered in a cool manner like it didn't matter if i would be late for my meeting. stike two: called him after 30 mins (yes i was still in the office patiently waiting for him) took 4 rings to answer and said, mam nasa edsa pa ako. and he hung up. nice. strike three: when i was finally able to go to my meeting (thank god the person i was meeting with was still in a meeting) he had the guts to say that i shouldn't take long since he has to go back to alabang and fetch the one who was the cause of my tardiness!

the nerve! he was even trying to make small talk and making funny quips. which was rewarded with silence from yours truly.

this is absolutely annoying that i was late for a meeting that i scheduled. but was ruined by people who do not have any decency to know that our meetings are very important. palibhasa kasi nasa office lang sila lagi.

Social Networking and Earning at the same time

i have thought long and hard if i should plunge into paid blogging. i've been given good points and positive feedback from good friends. and having extra income won't hurt. something extra for little indulgences.

after a lot of google searches, a few hits and misses, i finally stumbled upon SocialSpark. the site does not bank on just giving you opportunities to blog about but a medium to create a community and interact with the other bloggers in socialspark. imagine that, you get to earn and at the same time, meet new friends and contacts. the people inSocialSpark are very sociable. the same day i signed up, i got new messages and even props to my blog (props are like "points" or "pokes" or "votes". ) and it gives a great feeling that they do make an effort in visiting my blog. it shows, i have mybloglog and blog catalog to track those who visited.

anyway, enough about me, this entry is all about socialspark and how it will help my blog.

this site is one of the most credible paid blogging sites i have encountered. imagine, they have a code of ethics that you have to read to know what you can and can't do. they do not require you to indicate that you are getting paid for blogging. personally i find it quite of a hassle if you are required to shout out to the world that you are getting paid for blogging. at socialspark, you still have power over your blog at it's personality. as much as possible, they want your entries as personal as it can get.

speaking of the code of ethics, here are the things that are noteworthy:

-100% Audit-able In-Post Disclosure
-100% Transparency
-100% Real Opinions
-100% Search Engine Friendly

oh, and get this, you can also create opportunites for the bloggers in your community. it's a win-win situation in socialspark. so i suggest, if you have time in your hands, go and create and account with them. the opportunities and payout is great. there might be a gem of a blog post there worth $100. can that convince you enough?

21 ways to enjoy being a mom

credits to Parenting.com who has been a great resource and life saver when i am literally in the dark in handling two toddlers.

i may be this steady mom to some friends who looks like parenting is a breeze, but if not for parenting.com and babycenter. i would be frazzled, wallowing in 2 post partum depressions and haggard looking 26 year old.

this is to all the moms and dads out there! Parenting Rocks!

21 ways to enjoy being a mom

1. When you're tired, hand your kids a brush, point to your head, and tell them to play beauty parlor. When you're really tired, pretend that you're Sleeping Beauty. - amen!

2. Take your mother to a spa. While you're both getting seaweed wraps, tell her all your favorite memories of growing up. - i think this would be impossible. haha!

3. Take a bath with your infant. Make sure your husband is around for the handoff, so you can relax until the last minute. (Don't forget to smell your baby right afterward. Heaven!) - exactly!

4. At the end of every summer, take a family photo for the holiday card (you'll be happy to have this accomplished once December comes). Every year, add a framed 11-by-14-inch print to your front hall. Your kids will be proud now and laugh later at the funny styles. - this is in the family pipeline (that sounds very sales-like! haha)

5. On St. Patrick's Day, dye the milk and eggs green and turn the furniture upside down so your home looks like total chaos. When your little ones wake up, tell them that the leprechauns came.

6. The next time you have to go to a boring kiddie activity, invite another mom-friend along. Hide wine in sippy cups for the two of you to nurse undercover. -haha nice idea!

7. Play Freaky Friday with your husband and switch roles for a day. Enjoy his renewed appreciation for his Super Mom wife. - i know!!

8. . In the dead of winter, fix some snacks, get under warm quilts, and watch Happy Feet on DVD. Tell your kids you love them even more than the penguins love their chicks. - no winter here in the Philippines but this is a great idea!

9. Go to the beach in the off-season. Throw rocks in the water and collect shells. Put them in a vase and use it as shelf decor in your living room.

10. Skip the Raffi and Barney. Turn your kids on to Bob Marley, They Might Be Giants, and Gwen Stefani. - hey, where's the beatles, the who, incubus etc?

11. Take your baby out to the movies at night. (Infants love the dark, and loud trailers make them snooze immediately.) Then you can sip your soda and munch your popcorn in peace. - is this true?

12. Buy yourself that fancy watch, strand of pearls, or whatever piece of expensive jewelry you've been lusting after. Justify your purchase by rationalizing that you'll pass it down to your daughter (or son's wife) eventually. -haha! i'll leave this to hubby. books for me. :)

13. Take your kids to live music performances from very early ages. Cheap ones outdoors are great to start with in case you need to make a hasty exit (like when a diaper explodes).

14. Use your kids as an excuse to do the things you want to do, like going to silly feel-good movies, eating mac and cheese for dinner, and jumping in the moonbounce. Use your kids as an excuse to get out of things you don't want to do, like going to a wedding or office party. - oh yes!

15. Every Mother's Day, have a picture taken with your kids. Keep the photos all together - along with special cards, ticket stubs, mementos, and anything else that makes you feel good about being a mom - in a shoe box. (Of course, you must get those new shoes you love in order to do this correctly.) Every year, look through your Goddess Mom box and see how much your kids have grown. - goddess mom, i like that! must buy shoes, more shoes then! for the boxes of course!

16. Give your kids quiet time every day. Let them learn to be by themselves with books, crayons, or blocks. - exactly!

17. Let your whole family take a day off and hang out in pj's all day long. - we call that weekends

18. Rent Sex and the City on DVD, and reminisce about the days when you were single and the biggest problem you had was whether the "He" of the moment was going to call. Let the romance of your youth seduce you. Then remember that, despite your freedom, all you really wanted was to fall in love and have beautiful babies. -amen!

19. Pitch a tent in the backyard. Use it as your outdoor reading room. Or when there's a full moon, plan a family campout with sleeping bags, a transistor radio, and s'mores, of course.

20. Invent a house fairy. Give her a name, and tell your kids that she is always watching them and counting up their good deeds.

21. Listen for the deep, happy sighs that come after your kids play or laugh really hard. Tuck them away in your heart. - i wish my heart's big enough to keep all the sighs and love moments i have with my kids. never a day goes by without something new to tuck in my heart.

100 words and monday work blues

you held my hand tightly. Snuggled beside me. Fought the monsters under the bed and those in my mind.

Your smell was a comforting hug. Your breath was a steady hum. You had this calming effect on me ever since you came into my life.

A single tear fell across my cheeks. I didn’t notice you saw it. I didn’t know you were watching me the whole time.

You wiped it away. Held my hand, kissed me and said:

It’s ok mommy, I’m here for you.

And you made me cry all over again. and this time with happy tears.

~~~
i didn't realize it until i looked in my planner that it has been 6 months today that i have been working for THE company. and with pride i am happy to say that i am now a regular employee. after little hiccups along the way and some drama and paranoid thoughts. everything paid off. and to those who have been bombarded with my drama, thank you for the patience and sticking with me and keeping me sane. it means a lot!
~~
been quite delinquent with LP entries. didn't have enough time to focus on my entries. but of course, work has to come first no matter what. =)
~~
and starting today, i'm going jogging. and i'm blogging about the experience tomorrow. too bad i don't have my camera today. left it on top of the bed while i was changing bags. boo!
happy monday blues to you! =)
debt free before the year ends for us!
aishi and i have been on the good track to fix our debts, especially our credit card debts which have, admittedly been the biggest burden to us financially. but we are getting there and before the year ends, we're debt free! yey for us right? we're really happy and couting down the days to our debt free lives and to finally have something more to save for our mini splurges and things for the kids.
i remember the first months when we realized that we're in for a neck deep debt. we had to resort to people who knew credit repair services who would assist us. we badly wanted someone who was an expert in credit repair and someone who would shed light on things that concerns bad credit repair . it really hepls when there's someone to guide you when you're stuck with debts and bad credit. it's better to consult someone in the field rather than figuring out things on your own and there's someone other than your conscience that tells you: hey, you need to save up first. that isn't the most practical purchase, sacrifice your eating out for a while and a whole lot of things that would make you think twice about spending.
it has helped a lot considering we have learned to discuss and decide which ones are worth spending on and which ones can be by passed until we have enough money saved up to make those spontaneous splurges. but for now, we're happy that there's someone out there willig to help to repair credit .
a lesson learned for those shopaholics. =)
something new and the expected at Ms Universe 2008
first few minutes into the video:
my only comment was: now that's an un-beauty queen! the first time i saw an outgoing ms. universe wearing a tux. bravo!! now that's a queen in my book.
the remaining mintues:
hindi pa ba nagsasawa ang mga tao na lagi na lang nasa line up ang venezuela? second name ata ng pageant na to eh ms venezuela. hehe
it's a good thing an asian won last year or else i would've lost hope in these pageants haha.
and yes, ms. usa fell again. trend perhaps? would ms. usa do it again next year? three's a charm you know. =)
a hundred words
A hundred word short story
100 words
Inspiration alert!
The inner writer goddess in me has awoken. And yes I am motivated to post my own hundred word story. No matter how shallow and plain it might be, it will be my own story to share to whoever would spare a few minutes to read it.
But for now, I have to use my trusty old notebooks. I can’t bring the computer with me everywhere I go. And the traditional way is still tops.
And yes, this is my latest discovery, what’s yours?
The trouble with tantrums
The trouble with tantrums
I thought the worst was over when we hurdled the terrible twos phase earlier than expected. I thought we could sit back and relax, do arts and crafts, sing nursery rhymes, laugh and scream our hearts out. Oh boy, these things came with a price. A big price.
Eversince turning 3 was looming in the horizon, Kyle had started to have this tantrum attacks where he would want one thing and reject it the next. He would hate having his baths before school and we would always end up in crying fits with a few hitting and slapping (from kyle of course). I felt bad that his nanny would get the most hits and slaps. But I applaud her patience for not hitting back. She really is an angel to me and kyle.
I have been researching on what is this thing about kids turning 3 and the mood swings. I had my share of mood swings too. Where I would entertain thoughts of spanking my kid, and far worse thoughts but I had to stop myself and resort to just crying or trying to think happy thoughts. or even locking myself in the bathroom for 10 minutes.
It has been a long learning process and everyday I have to come up with things that would make the tantrum fizzle out.
Here are some things I learned:
> Tantrums are normal. Kids have emotions too and they just don’t know how to handle it. It’s an emotional sneeze where they have to let out the thing the bothers them to make everything clear.
> Let you child deal with the tantrum, be there for the kid. Let him vent it out. It will pass. It’s better to have a kid throwing a tantrum than being in a good disposition 100% of the time. This just means that you child is in tune with his emotions. All we, as parents have to do is listen and not ride on the tantrum because they’re not following what we want them to do or if they don’t know what they want. Compromise.
> It helps kids learn to think and find out how to get what they want. It lets them explore. Tantrums may be because they just can’t figure out what they really want. As long as you are there for them with or without support, it would satisfy them.
> And of course good ol hugs are one of the best remedies to calming a child. Works everytime. When kyle’s in a fit, I would let him cry for a while, stomp his feet etc. then let him come near him, then I hug him. In a few minutes, crying subsides and we can then talk about what he wants or what bothers him. Mommy’s hugs are the best I tell you.
So, what have I learned from this? Tantrums are still big surprises and one must be on their toes. One solution may not work for now, some may never work. But the most important is to be there when your kid is throwing a tantrum. Maybe it’s his way of telling you, hey mom/dad you need to spend more time with me.
How’s that for a thought?
Thursday, Jul 10, 2008 You might be feeling so pleasant today that you won't actually feel like making all that much of an effort at anything right now. But that would probably be a mistake since you've got so much positive energy behind you at this time. So try to do something other than just have fun today.
If your financial picture has been a bit unclear lately, you ought to use this time to try to straighten a few things out. You could find yourself starting to feel a little more attractive and magnetic than usual right now. And you ought to be able to attract whatever you want fairly easily if you just put your mind to it.
something nice to read for once. and yes, i have been positive lately. =)
conversations with a soon to be nurse
Was talking to Tita E a few weeks back about her choice to move professions, she was once a banker for a few good years until she got tired of it and retired. now she's on a new path to serve people. she has decided to be a nurse.
i understand her neverending quest for knowledge. after retiring from the bank, she decided to pursue a master's degree, after earning her stripes so to speak, now she's halfway there in becoming a nurse. and i have never been so proud of her. i was silently wishing that i could have that thirst for knowledge and the will to study as much as she has.
but i digress. i was asking her how studying nursing was and i was bombarded with a lot of terms that only in the medical profession you'll get to encounter. she was mentioning something about never events , pressure ulcers and elopement . so i had to ask her to explain to me one by one these terms and all the other terms that i heard while watching house, csi, grey's anatomy and all those other medical drama/series.
and i didn't notice that we have been talking (well, her talking most of the time) for almost 2 hours. she was even trying to convince me to try out nursing. but unfortunately i have to decline. i have issues with needles and people in pain.
the next time i see her, i'm sure we'll get to talk about new things in the medical world. and hopefully she'll get to share stories about her encounter in the OR and ER. this is like watching another medical drama!
PS I Love You
After 10 million years of reading the book, I finally got hold of the movie adaptation of Cecilia Ahern’s PS I love You. Initially I planned on watching it alone since from day one, aishi would never watch sappy, tear jerking love stories with me. But last night was different and I was surprised.
I finally set up the laptop on my side of the bed, aishi asked what I’m going to watch. He said he’ll take a look for a good few minutes of the movie then head off to sleep. But wouldn’t you know, he was there beside me from start to finish. With a few side comments on the side. Not necessarily in connection to the movie. But more of a lambing hirit.
At the start of the movie, tears were welling up in my eyes already. It was that good. There were lines that were worth taking note of and remembering forever. Aishi was puzzled why I was crying on certain scenes of the movie. To which I retorted: hindi ka ban a-touch sa sinabi? Hindi ka ba affected sa situation? And to which the answer was, hindi, eh movie lang yan eh.
Fine. Great. So much for a sensitive husband eh?
All in all, I loved the book, and I loved the movie. This one will be in my list of movies to watch over and over again.
And of course, this post wouldn’t be complete without the quotable-quotes:
Gerry : [holding Holly by the shoulders] What do you want? I know what I want, cause I'm holding it in my hands.
Gerry Kennedy: [calms Holly] Every morning I still wake up and the first thing I want to do is to see your face.
Gerry Kennedy: Dear Holly, I don't have much time. I don't mean literally, I mean you're out buying ice cream and you'll be home soon. But I have a feeling this is the last letter, because there is only one thing left to tell you. It isn't to go down memory lane or make you buy a lamp, you can take care of yourself without any help from me. It's to tell you how much you move me, how you changed me. You made me a man, by loving me Holly. And for that, I am eternally grateful... literally. If you can promise me anything, promise me that whenever you're sad, or unsure, or you lose complete faith, that you'll try to see yourself through my eyes. Thank you for the honor of being my wife. I'm a man with no regrets. How lucky am I. You made my life, Holly. But I'm just one chapter in yours. There'll be more. I promise. So here it comes, the big one. Don't be afraid to fall in love again. Watch out for that signal, when life as you know it ends. P.S. I will always love you.
Now let’s all say awww…
Oh and did I mention, Gerard Butler is one hot man. And the accent… *swoon*
Now, I have to get the other books by Cecilia ahern. And she’s just my age… galling!!
proud mommy moment
the moment they utter the word mommy with such need and pleading for love, makes me the mom of the universe.
especially now that Keon can really call me mama with such command that i have to drop everything i'm doing and give him my undivided attention. nothing less. and the way he would greet me every morning with such sunshine in his smiles erases the sleepless night, the stress, the worries of the previous day. poles apart from his kuya, who's mr. grouchy pants. haha but - i'm the only one he wants to be with when he wakes up. no one else, not even daddy. haha
another milestone keon has is he can clearly identify who's mommy in pictures apart from me and my mom and other family members.
now all he has to learn is how he can call me mommy when my mom wants to be called mama. but that is a work in progress.
i sure have the greatest kids on earth. =)
jenny's brdial shower
one word: Traumatizing!!
hahaha never in my life did i experience that. and i thought those things happen in movies lang. naive much? indeed i am.
now i'll never look at bridal showers the same way again. and hopefully the next time, i wouldn't be violated that much.
but the venue was oozing with photo ops. like this:
you have to give me credit for this. haha mirrors are the coolest!
and of course, the bridal shower became a mini reunion for my hs friends. for pictures, i've uploaded them in my multiply account. :)
me? a domestic goddes?
having a family of my own i have finally realized that i am not like the other moms out there. i'm not the one who cleans the house, washes the clothes, changes the bedsheets. i'm the un-domestic mom. i've realuzed that i have been pampered enough that there is someone to clean up after me or i'll be forced to clean up by mom. either way, i'm not the type who would clean the house on a whim.
but, i think if there are those cool gadgets that would make cleaning fun and easier, i wouldn't mind being the domestic goddess. until i got word about Dirt Devil . this is not your ordinary vaccum cleaner. it makes vaccumming a lot more glamorous! and the best part of it, and why i'm itching to have one: it's cordless! i don't have to worry about the kids tripping on the wire or getting disconnected from the socket. i could go on and on around the house.
imagine this wonderful house helper would be there for every spills and mess - either by the kids or the adults. and it's Energy Star approval makes the Dirt Devil a whole lot better than its competitors, imagine saving almost 70% of your energy. that's a lot more time of bonding and playing with the kids!
